An AI crawler is a program that an AI company sends to read web pages. Some build the search results an assistant uses to answer questions. Others collect text to train future models. They are separate, and you can allow one kind and refuse the other.
There are two common ways. A line in robots.txt that refuses a crawler by name, often added by a plugin. Or a firewall or CDN setting that turns away AI bots before they reach the site. This check tests both.
The ones that feed live answers: OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User for ChatGPT, PerplexityBot for Perplexity, Claude-SearchBot for Claude, plus Googlebot and Bingbot. Training crawlers such as GPTBot or Google-Extended are a different choice, and blocking them does not remove you from search.
We request your homepage once as a normal browser and once each with the names of three AI crawlers, then compare the answers. Real crawlers come from their own networks, so your firewall may treat them a little differently. A block shown here is a strong sign that something needs a look.
